Do I Need a Private GP Health Check?

11th September 2026

An opportunity to take a closer look at your overall health.

Whether you’re feeling completely well or have a health concern you’d like to discuss, a private GP health check allows you to take a proactive approach to your overall health.

Unlike appointments that focus on a single symptom, a health check looks at the bigger picture. It gives you time to discuss your medical history, lifestyle and any concerns you may have, helping to identify potential health issues early and providing reassurance where everything is normal.

What happens during a health check?
Every patient is different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Your appointment will usually begin with a detailed discussion about your health, including:

  • Your medical history.
  • Current symptoms or concerns.
  • Family history.
  • Lifestyle, including diet, exercise and sleep.
  • Current medications.

This conversation helps your GP understand your overall health before deciding whether any further assessment or investigations are appropriate.

Will I need any tests?
Not everyone will need tests. Depending on your age, symptoms and medical history, your GP may recommend investigations such as blood tests or other assessments if they are clinically appropriate.

The aim isn’t to carry out unnecessary testing, but to ensure any investigations are tailored to your individual needs.

Who could benefit from a health check?
A private GP health check may be helpful if you:

  • Haven’t seen a GP for some time.
  • Are not entitled to NHS care, or want a more convenient appointment.
  • Have a family history of certain health conditions.
  • Feel generally unwell but aren’t sure why.
  • Want to discuss your overall health and wellbeing.
  • Have several concerns you’d like to talk through in one appointment.
  • Would simply like reassurance about your health.

It’s also an opportunity to ask questions you may not have had time to discuss elsewhere.

Why is prevention important?
Many health conditions develop gradually and may not cause obvious symptoms in their early stages.

A health check can help identify potential risk factors and provide advice on maintaining your health before problems develop.

Sometimes the outcome is simply reassurance. Other times, it may highlight areas where lifestyle changes, monitoring or further investigation would be beneficial.
