Cervical screening checks for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for almost all cervical cancers. If high-risk HPV is found, the same sample is examined for changes in the cells of the cervix. Bond Medical offers routine cervical screening and HPV testing in a private, unhurried setting. This suits patients who are overdue, who have found previous screening uncomfortable, or who cannot attend during standard hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions below. Everything you need to know is right here, designed to help you make an informed and confident decision.

How often should I have cervical screening?

In England, screening is offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64. Those aged 25 to 49 are invited every three years and those aged 50 to 64 every five years, though your result may mean an earlier repeat.

What does an HPV positive result mean?

It means a high-risk type of HPV was found. HPV is very common and usually cleared by the body without causing problems. It does not indicate recent sexual contact, as the virus can be present for years. Where HPV is found, the sample is examined for cell changes, and you may be offered an earlier repeat or referral.

Does the test hurt?

Most people find it uncomfortable rather than painful, and it takes only a few minutes. Tell us if you have found it difficult before, as adjustments often help, including a smaller speculum and taking more time.

Do I still need screening if I have had the HPV vaccine?

Yes. The vaccine protects against the HPV types that cause most cervical cancers but not all of them, so screening remains important for vaccinated women and people with a cervix.
