Dermoscopy is a technique that uses a handheld magnifying device with a light to examine moles and skin lesions in detail, revealing features not visible to the naked eye. It is a quick, painless part of assessing pigmented and other lesions, and helps decide whether a lesion can be reassured, monitored, removed or referred.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions below. Everything you need to know is right here, designed to help you make an informed and confident decision.

Is dermoscopy uncomfortable?

No. It is quick and painless. The device is placed gently against the skin to magnify and light the area being examined.

What can dermoscopy show?

It reveals patterns and structures within a mole or lesion that help distinguish harmless lesions from those that need closer attention.

Does dermoscopy give a definite diagnosis?

It greatly improves assessment, but where uncertainty remains, a biopsy or referral may still be recommended to be sure.

Is this mole or skin lesion something I should worry about?

Most moles and skin lesions are harmless, and it is changes that matter most. A helpful guide is ABCDE: Asymmetry, an irregular Border, more than one Colour, a Diameter larger than about 6mm, and any Evolving change over time. A mole that looks different from your others, or a new or changing spot that itches, bleeds or does not heal, should be assessed. Assessment, often with dermoscopy, helps decide whether to reassure, monitor or refer.
