Have a mole checked if it is new, changing, or looks different from your others, or if it itches, bleeds or does not heal. The ABCDE guide (Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving) is a helpful prompt.
If a mole has concerning features, we arrange the appropriate referral, which for suspected skin cancer is usually an urgent (2-week) pathway.
A mole check is an assessment. If removal is appropriate, it is arranged as a separate procedure once suitability is confirmed; suspicious moles are referred to hospital dermatologists rather than removed cosmetically.
Most moles and skin lesions are harmless, and it is changes that matter most. A helpful guide is ABCDE: Asymmetry, an irregular Border, more than one Colour, a Diameter larger than about 6mm, and any Evolving change over time. A mole that looks different from your others, or a new or changing spot that itches, bleeds or does not heal, should be assessed. Assessment, often with dermoscopy, helps decide whether to reassure, monitor or refer.
