Skin lesions include a wide range of lumps, bumps and marks on the skin, the great majority of which are harmless. Assessment identifies what a lesion is and whether it needs any action. Using examination and dermoscopy, we advise whether a lesion can be reassured, monitored, removed or referred for specialist assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions below. Everything you need to know is right here, designed to help you make an informed and confident decision.

What kinds of skin lesions do you assess?

These include moles, cysts, skin tags, warts, seborrhoeic keratoses (harmless age-related spots) and other lumps and marks. Most are benign.

How do you decide what to do with a lesion?

After examining and often using dermoscopy, we consider the appearance and history. Depending on this, a lesion may be reassured, monitored, removed or referred.

Can lesions be removed at the same appointment?

Some straightforward benign lesions can be removed at a follow-up procedure appointment. Assessment always comes first to confirm this is appropriate.

Is this mole or skin lesion something I should worry about?

Most moles and skin lesions are harmless, and it is changes that matter most. A helpful guide is ABCDE: Asymmetry, an irregular Border, more than one Colour, a Diameter larger than about 6mm, and any Evolving change over time.

A mole that looks different from your others, or a new or changing spot that itches, bleeds or does not heal, should be assessed. Assessment, often with dermoscopy, helps decide whether to reassure, monitor or refer.
